Respiratory Protection

Purpose The Respiratory Protection Program is designed to protect employees by establishing practices for respirator use, providing guidelines for training and respirator selection, and explaining proper storage, use and care of respirators. It also serves to help the company and its employees comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) respiratory protection requirements as found in 29 CFR 1910.134. Use of respirators will be determined during the completion of an Activity Hazard Analysis for each work activity.

Responsibilities Management • Provide respirators to employees when required at no charge • Cover any expense associated with training, medical evaluations and equipment • Conducting qualitative fit testing as necessary • Administering the medical surveillance as necessary • Maintaining records as required • Evaluating and updating the program as necessary

All Employees

• Ensure implementation • Continually monitoring work areas and operations to identify respiratory hazards • Enforcing the proper use of respiratory protection when necessary

• Each employee is responsible for wearing his or her respirator when/where/how they were trained • Care for and maintain their respirators as instructed, guard them against damage, andstore them in a clean, sanitary location. • Replace, or request a replacement, if their respirator no longer fits properly andinform their supervisor • Inform their supervisor or safety coordinator of any respiratory hazards that they feelare not adequately addressed in the workplace and of any other concerns that they have • Use the respiratory protection in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions andthe training received.
