Heat and Cold Illness Prevention

Purpose Working in extreme temperatures (hot or cold) can overwhelm the body’s internal temperature control system. When the body is unable to warm or cool itself, heat or cold related stress can result. Heat and cold stress can contribute to adverse health effects which range in severity. Our company has implemented this Heat and Cold Stress section to minimize the effects of heat and cold stress on our employees. This section contains the procedures and practices for safely working in temperature extremes as identified during the completion of an Activity Hazard Analysis. Scope and Application This section was developed to protect all employees from hazards posed by working in the outdoor environment. Our company is committed to preventing extreme weather-related illnesses that can occur to employees working outdoors by: • Identifying, evaluating and controlling potential exposure toextreme temperature, humidity, and other environmental factors. • Providing drinking water • Providing supervisor and employee training Outdoor work includes any employee assigned to work in the outdoor environment on a regular basis. Responsibilities Management/Safety Coordinator • Maintain, review and update the Heat and Cold Stress section as needed. • Provide monitoring and assist employees with the development of procedures to minimize the adverse effects of heat and cold stress in the workplace. • Provide training to employees affected by heat and cold. All Employees • Review and comply with the provisions outlined • Ensure all employees are properly trained before working in extreme temperature conditions. • Assess the day-to-day heat or cold stresses on employees. • Assess employees work load and assigning work and rest schedules as needed.
